Making time for you
Being a researcher is a demanding role and it is often not a nine-to-five job! However, it is important, for your physical and mental well-being, to maintain a balance between work and the rest of your life!
It may be as simple as making sure that you take regular coffee and lunch breaks, either to socialise with colleagues and friends or just to get away from your office or the lab for a while. Joining an exercise class or a sports club or society can also be a good way of taking a break, reducing stress and making sure that you leave work on time in the evening. Most universities have very good sports facilities and often run a wide range of staff clubs. Look into it and see what's on offer at your institution!
Combining work with a family or responsibilities as a carer
Achieving a good work-life balance can be even more important if you are combining work with bringing up a young family or caring for an elderly or disabled adult. There are a range of government regulations that impact on employers' responsibilities in this area. For further information see Rights and responsibilities. You may also find some useful tips in the section on stress management.
