08 February 2010

By Nick Dickens

It's been (over) a month since the new year and all the resolutions that I made, a lot of them work and career-related.  Overall I'd say that I am doing pretty well, although I am yet to venture outside and start running - but maybe this evening... I have organised my working week so that I don't spend what seemed like my entire life in meetings and I am able to continue supporting the research of others while developing my own projects.  A couple of things have fallen by the wayside - early to bed on 'school nights' and having a TV-free night during the week are long forgotten.  My troubleshooting sessions/seminars for the centre are going well and I am happy with my networking push, I know most of the people in the centre at least to say hello to and most people seem to recognise me.  I am still very positive, 2010 seems like it is shaping up to be a very positive year, a long-running paper has finally been accepted and I feel settled and useful in my new job. I'd be interested to hear what resolutions others have made this year and how they have held up over the last month.

Hi Nick, good to take stock I guess... my work related resolutions have been to help set up a research staff association-which is happening in a big way, thanks to the people in the UKRSA. I also feel the list of research staff communities is coming along well. My resolve to become more organised (and process focused) are not faring nearly so well. But I am really adament I will learn from last year's experience of organising the research staff conference, to make it even better this year. I have already made a start thinking about it... let me know if anyone has got ideas/ wishes etc.

My work-related resolutions are twofold. The first is to submit lots of papers to conferences and journals (and I've made a start on that). The second is the sticking point - finding another job is not proving easy!

Ha! You took the words out of my mouth, Hannah - mine has to be to get a job. No joy with *that* so far...

Right along with Hannad and Sarah, my primary aim was to obtain a new position! But I also want to find time to do my own research, which is sort of related to the goal of obtaining a new job. As for the TV free night, for me that only happened when there was no TV in my apartment -- the temptation was just too great!
