Career options for researchers
Researchers have a wide range of career options. Today's job market offers researchers a huge diversity of career opportunities in various roles and sectors. The unemployment level among doctoral graduates is less than 4%.
This part of the website offers some starting points for exploring your career options and helps you consider whether staying in higher education and/or in research are the right decisions for you.
Compared to the graduate job market, however, career opportunities for researchers are not always obvious or easily accessible. Researchers are generally not exposed to recruitment campaigns or job fairs so you may miss out on contact with employers. Some researchers see themselves purely as specialists, and may overlook interesting career opportunities.
To fully explore your career options you will need to investigate two distinct aspects:
-
your situation and needs: for example, what are my career priorities and what are my skills?
-
what’s out there: the job market – what career opportunities are available to me and what do employers look for?
It is worth noting that there are additional career opportunities available to you outside the current job market. For example, working as a freelancer, starting your own business and embarking on further study are ways you can generate your own opportunities. Your institution’s careers service will be able to give you more information and guidance on these options.
