SECURE 2, a European initiative aimed at improving research careers, launched in September 2025 in Savajevo.
Building on the first SECURE project, read an interview with Vitae’s Emma Day, Head of Policy and Engagement, and Clare Viney, CEO of CRAC Vitae, as they discuss how researchers can feel empowered to build their careers, despite challenges such as job insecurity, short term contracts, frequent relocations and unclear career paths.
For the first SECURE project, CRAC Vitae led the development of the SECURE principles for tenure-track like models, as well as developing the Research Career Framework (RCF) recommendations.
The SECURE initiative encourages institutions to embed permanence and stability into research careers, with the European Commission investing heavily in researcher support to retain talent in Europe. SECURE 1 involved six pilot institutions across Europe, with each implementing actions from the RCF. SECURE 2 will expand to eight pilots, with more time given as well as institutional support.
For researchers, engaging with networks such as MCAA (Marie Curie Alumni Association), Eurodoc and ICoRSA (International Consortium of Research Staff Associations) will enable opportunities – taking control of your career as a researcher is possible argue Emma Day and Clare Viney.
